In order to understand the Green Building concept, we have to let customers know the key concepts to be knowledge as following:

Negawatt  Power

Iis a theoretical unit of power that representing  the amount of energy (measured in watts) saved. The energy saved is a direct result of energy conservation and /or increase energy efficiency. The idea is supported by the assumption that utility customers do not think in terms of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Instead what they want are energy driven services such as hot showers, lit rooms, comfortable living spaces, etc. that come at lower cost if power is used more efficiently.

Megawatt (MW)

Is a measure of power. Utility companies bill their customers in terms of kwh. A megawatt equals a thousand kw. Regular homes use between 11,000 to 25,00-0 kwh a year depending on location, climate, and equipment. A green house in the same conditions will use half of this amount. If photovoltaic and solar thermal devices are included, the bill may even disappear.

There are six factors that can make your home a building green as following: design, materials, insulation, mechanical system, power system and water system, but only one that affects the production of megawatts (supply).

Return of Investment (ROI)

As a general rule, the investments made in negawatts are more cost-effective than the ones in megawatts. Initial cost for nenawatts are generally lower and long lasting, although the gap with renewable energy systems is closing every day as costs go down and federal and local incentives kick in. Nowadays a typical 24 kw solar system will likely have paid for itself in 7-10 years. The systems last approximately 30 years, meaning that system could potentially provide at least 20 years of free energy. But if you want to see immediate results, we recommend working first in the negawatts (improve the insulation and improve the mechanical, power and water systems). Therefore, installing renewable energy generating capacity to offset your electricity consumption, is a smart decision in terms of insulating your environment from escalating electricity costs and demonstrates your commitment to contributing to avoid carbon imprint houses.
